Descending the hierarchy
Datasets are rather sophisticated objects, with many parts. Most
datasets in the catalog are rather heavily nested, giving a tree-like
structure with the root being the text documentation about the
dataset, and the leaves being single variables that are functions of
(X,Y,Z,T). At present, there are many more operators available for
leaves than branches, so the first series of steps after a search
descend the hierarchy to reach the individual variables.
