  • The Maldives Meteorological Service,
  • Columbia University Water Center

Principal Investigator: Dr. Michael Glantz

Project Director: Robert Ross

Project Goals & Objectives:

1. Raising awareness on climate change, particularly on the effects on El Niño and La Niña
2. Providing research data for regional governments and non-governmental entities
3. Predicting and communicating impacts on local economies and resources
4. Monitoring weather patterns to create comprehensive climatic models.

Sri Lanka Case Study:

Principal Investigators – Lareef Zubair
Investigators: Zahid, Probodha Agalwatte, Ruchichara Lokuhetti, Janan Visvanathan, Jonathan Frank

What has been done so far?

  1. Reviewed El Nino related literature
  2. Assessed Weather and Climate and its attribution
  3. Monitored Impacts on some critical sectors such as Coral Reefs, Hazards and Dengue in both countries and Hydropower and Agriculture in Sri Lanka
  4. Reported on Drought during the Yala 2016 period.
  5. Studying communication of climate and its impacts in relation to the El Nino events

Ongoing Work:

We shall follow up with studies on anomalies such as the Floods and Landslides of May 2016
