We started work as a small project sponsored by the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (hosted at Columbia University and the University of California-San Diego) and the Mahaweli Authority in 2000. Thereafter realizing a need to promote research in environmental and climate science and technology and its societal and environmental applications, we started the Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology under a service oriented non-profit charter.
FECT builds on the work of the officers in Sri Lanka and internationally. Our work is oriented towards developing useable scientific and technological information that can be applied by users in diverse sectors.
We work with partners locally and in the Maldives, Comoros, and Zanzibar coordinated by the Federation for Environment, Climate and Technology. We have undertaken about 30 projects with organizations in Government institutions, Research Institutes, Universities, Civil Society, Local Government and the Private Sector.
To generate and use research for the benefit of society and environment particularly the vulnerable.
To sustain a think tank and centre of excellence in climate, environment and information technologies with quality research to address societal concerns and ecological protection.
Our Past Contributions:-
We have undertaken Climate & Environmental research, implemented climate adaptation projects, developed infra-structure for research and trained over a score of personnel since 1997. To sustain these advances, we instituted the Foundation for Environment, Climate and Technology. FECT contributes to climate, hydrology, adaptation, information technology, social sciences and engineering for sustainable development. Our officers have engaged in projects in Sri Lanka for over 15 years that made significant contributions in the demonstration of
- Science application projects
- Science and Technology Data base development
- Climate and Environmental diagnostic work
- Development of local technological capacity
Our Goal is to contribute towards:-
- Disaster Risk Identification for Sri Lanka
- Disaster Information Dissemination
- Climate and Rural Energy
- Hydro meteorological Monitoring
- Climate Atlas
- Regional Climate Modeling
- Dynamic Disaster Hazard Identification
- Early Warning Systems for Natural Hazards
- Early Warning System for Dengue Risk
